Nerdnette Crushes: Harrison Ford

28 Aug

Literally 10 minutes before I started writing this post, I’d just finished watching “Air Force One” with my mom. That movie is so EPIC every single time I watch it, and I can’t help but always think about how dreamy, and manly Harrison Ford is as the president of the United States. Then it occured to me that the feeling/admiration of how dreamy and manly Harrison Ford is, happens EVERY TIME I watch his movies. No matter how terrible the movie might be, *cough* *Six Days, Seven Nights* *cough,* or cheesy (I fucking LOVE “Sabrina”) his sexy, manly presence always makes my lady parts tingle. Teehee. Oh yeah, and he’s a pretty good actor which makes the kindo lame movies even more bearable. Let’s take time to appreciate this man, who is big sexy all around. In no particular order, these are some of my fave H.F films:

1. Air Force One

Gary Oldman may have have a gun up to Harrison’s neck, but of course Harrison’s manliness overtakes Oldman’s crazy terrorist character and tells him to get the fuck off his plane.

2. Clear and Present Danger

It’s another one of those edge of your seat, action thriller movies where things explode, and he shoots tons of guns. Hawt.

3. Blade Runner

The costuming was awesome in this movie, as well as the sets/scenery/cinematography. I loved how dark mixed with neon to create a dirty looking future planet earth. Dudes, walking down Market St. at night makes me firmly believe this is where we’re heading.

4. Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom

Arguably the best film of the Indy franchise. It was actually really scary, gorey, and exciting. Therefore, it captivates me every time I watch it. That whole ripping the heart of out a dude’s chest was SUUUUPER gnarly and bad ass! Oh AND the whole manly adventurer thing, yeeeaahhh, I’m super into that.

5. Star Wars (all 3 of them)

Duh. This was the first H.F film I encountered with all the signatures that make me love him: smart ass with a big mouth? Check. Shoots his gun a lot? Check. Participates in an epic adventure? Check.

There are so many other H.F films I’ve enjoyed over my twenty six years of life: The Fugitive, Sabrina, Witness, and the list goes on. I guess what it comes down to is his ability to keep me on the edge of my seat, make me cry when something terrible happens, or make me blush when he’s being all cheesy and romantic. He’s an amazing actor that elicits those kinds of responses from his audiences. Welcome Harrison Ford, to the hall of Nerdnette Crushes!

Nerdnette Kryptonite: Etsy Finds

7 Aug

If you’re like the Nerdnettes, than you too are familiar with the kryptonite to our bank accounts that is Etsy. Usually it all starts with a harmless Etsy search just to see what’s out there in the way of (insert fandom here). The next thing we know we’ve logged in to PayPal and are now staring at a screen thanking us for our order, which will be processed shortly. This is followed by a  befuddling combination of buyer’s remorse and fangirl squees.

Before any befuddling can occur though, we first have to find those krptonic Etsy shops. And *sigh* we’ve found another one.

Nerd Alert is a quintessential DIY Etsy shop for any nerd or geek girl trendsetter. For one thing, the shop has a vast array of hair bows, aprons, and skirts that come in nearly ALL of my, Nerdnette Kaela’s, favorite fandoms (in no particular order: Doctor Who, Supernatural, Harry Potter, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Marvel, DC, Pokemon…). The shop also features original fabrics, which are not available online or in stores, so the custom options are pretty great.

Nerd Alert’s Wonder Woman apron that’s been featured on Geeks Are Sexy, Fashionably Geek, and So Geek Chic

Believe me when I write that I started adding items to my favorites like a fiend. Ridiculously adorable Iron Man apron? Favorited. One-of-a-kind Supernatural skirt with Sam and Dean ALL OVER it? Favorited. Loki skirt? Favorited. Trying to add only one item to the shopping cart is like having to pick one  puppy out of a whole litter of cuteness.

Oh, Nerd Alert, you make me proud to be a nerd.

Some Bat to Brighten Your Day

6 Aug

I am just going to come right out and say it: I LOVE Batman. I love the characters, storylines, movies, comics (which I just discovered and holy crap the new 52 event by DC!). I have yet to discover something about the Batman universe to sway me otherwise.

Well, earlier today I came across this little gem in my twitter feed (Thank you G4) and I felt like sharing it. I loved TDKR, and if you are a sane human being with good taste then you did too.

I have always loved stop-motion and I thought the guys behind this did a pretty good job, but not just with the action, pairing it with the music too. Plus, kudos to Hot Toys for an amazing job at capturing the likeness of  the actual actors faces. I mean, practically all of Christian Bale’s face is covered by his suit and yet you can tell it’s him under there. Grade A.

Deconstructed Closet Cosplay: Captain Jack Harkness

Captain Jack Harkness
Who doesn’t love Captain Jack? This cute summer number is inspired by our favorite open-minded companion of the Doctor, and features his signature naval coat as a pair of shorts. What’s also great about this look is the 1940s pinup feel, which references our first introduction to the Captain in WWII London in “The Empty Child.”

Jessica & I went to this panel at SDCC and IT WAS AMAZING!! There was such a positive vibe throughout the whole panel, which is so refreshing. Everyone was so supportive of each other, and we both left the panel inspired.
NOTE: we were also standing in line right behind Set to Stunning’s Lindz, who placed in the top two.

Set to Stunning

MTV Geek was on hand at San Diego Comic Con last weekend to shoot coverage of the Her Universe panel, “Are You A Geek Girl Trendsetter”.

Warp Core Breach

3 Aug

Soooooo we made this blog late last year with the full intention of ACTUALLY blogging on it, but 2012 has been a year full of containment failures in our warp drive (hello, Star Trek reference), which is to say that we’ve been busy. Among going to school, graduating from school, family & friends graduating from school, family deaths, trips out-of-town, moving, Pinterest, Tumblr, and San Diego Comic Con (BEST VACATION EVER), figuring out a new platform has been low on the list.

On the other hand, the Nerdnettes, like Bilbo Baggins (a Hobbit/LotR reference too?), have had some amazing adventures this year, so rather than allow such memories to fade, we’re getting back on WordPress and recording our tale of geekdom. Expect posts about our parties, get-togethers, Etsy finds, nerd fashion & beauty, and commentary on geek culture at large.

Please enjoy a new favorite: the Nerdist Podcast #228 with LeVar Burton.
